hope & a future, and The Help

i have carried my cell phone around the last 6 days
acting like an expectant first time daddy waiting on "the call"
from his pregnant wife.
lord have mercy
with savannah rushing at UGA, i have been on pins & needles.
not so much wondering who'll she choose
& who'll choose her.
well, actually that's not all together true...
but curious to know .....is she happy? is she still having fun?

rush is clearly not for the faint of heart.
it takes courage & bravery
to walk into house after house
 on your A game
wanting to be yourself
yet
wondering will you be liked.
sorta like a perpetual business interview
that lasts for days
& days.

while i've heard horror stories of girls wanting to drop out
not only from rush
but from the college.
i've also heard the wonderful stories
(thankfully there are many many more of these)
 girls becoming lifelong friends with the women
in the sororities they pledge.
that these years are some of the best years of their lives.
i've heard "it all works out"
"she'll be where she's supposed to be"

savannah has loved rush!
she had texted me after one downer and as i drove around i was sorta grumbling in my mind
about the situation.
next thing i know, she sends me a text
telling me
"but it's ok mom. i know the Lord has a plan for me
& it's all gone work out. jeremiah 29.11 promises me that".

proud moment.
she's growing up & has the heart of humility
and trust
and wisdom.
proud moment.

from wednesday morning on
savannah has texted me after each house.
starting out with 17
choosing & eliminating
being chosen and being eliminated.
today is a big day!
preferential round
she'll visit the final three.
tomorrow is a really big day.
classes begin
& then tomorrow night is Bid Day!!!
~~~~~~~
this weekend i went & saw The Help
with bailey and her mama.
FANTASTIC movie!!!!
while there were a few small differences from the book
nothing took away from the powerful & tender
story of these women.
these women are brave and loyal
and while their characters appear as the underdogs
they clearly are the characters
who rise above
& inspire.
kathryn stockett lives here in atlanta.
& atlanta has come out in full support
selling out this movie left & right!
read the book
you will love it
if you're from the south
you will really love it
go see the movie
you will love it
don't forget your tissues though!
& to my sweet girl
who i am so proud of
He does have a plan for you.
plans to give you hope & a future.
i sure do love you.
Jeremiah 29.11
"For I know the plans I have for you,”
declares the LORD,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
Oh my!! That Savannah is so wise beyond her years!! She is going to bess whichever sorority she joins so much!!! I am excited to hear which one she pledges. I have watched the bid day videos on youtube at her college before (as part of a news story I read somewhere). it is something else to see!!!
How wonderful that she is texting you about all this. I did not have that kind of relationship with my Mom at that time. I sure hope I have it with my kiddos.
Paige,
I love the fact that rush occurs pre-classes!! Way back in the dark ages, when I was in school, it happened while we were attempting to be new college students! I am so happy to hear that Savannah is handling this so well. Such an amazing foundation she, and all the girls have.
I must tell you that I have not been blogging this summer, as Kenny has taken a turn for the worse, and my time and my heart is his. The other day, I started to read "my blogs" again, and this morning God truly spoke to me... twice I have read, Jeremiah 29.11 "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
I have heard you, Lord.
What an exciting start. All your raising up is working! I did not rush sorority and ended up loving college and making lifelong friends from my freshman dorm floor in IL. Whichever way the young girls and guys go, college life is a dream world and now you get to watch it from afar (and via texts, great.) Enjoy the week.
exciting times for savannah! does she want to cheer for uga? i'm not sure if you've mentioned that or not and i have no clue how college cheering works (if you "try out" or if they recruit?). just curious b/c i know she has cheered for so long.
Yes, everything will work out for your sweet girl! I was in a sorority in college and it was the best thing that ever happened to me! I am still, 27 years later, friends with my sisters and through the years have been involved in alumnae groups!
I've never posted on your blog before. I just LOVE reading about your precious family. And YOUR heart is so precious. Goodness....My daughter went through Rush in 1987! At The U of AL. I will never forget that week and how excited it all was. She, like your, daughter, was able to stick through it all. I sure hope she gets what she wants and can embrace these college yrs. I know my daughter would LOVE to be back in college today! :O)These are fun, fun memories for all of you. And yes....the sorority sisters seem to last a life time. My daughter still gives thanks for her Tri Delta Sisters! Good luck to Savannah! She is a darling girl and has much ahead of her. It's all great!!!! Hang in there, MOM!!!!! BREATH!!!! It will be okay and fun, fun, fun!!!!
I went to a Catholic College~Sororities and Fraternities were banned. However, one of my closest friends from high school was in a Sorority and I know that Savannah will be just like her~she will choose wisely and the Sorority will have just as much to gain from her as she will from it! I love the quote you posted. God will guide her along the right path!
I read the Help but I have yet to see it~I can't wait!
That is so awesome that your daughter is loving the experience. I think a lot of it has to do with the girls and the school. I hated it at mine and ended up dropping out. I chalk it up to being an only child and really liking to be completely independent. Luckily no regrets. Keep up posted!
Loved the book, hoping to see the movie!
My my....these girls do grow up don't they? I'll be posting the same thing soon enough and I can guarantee I'm going to be a mess. I think I'm going to need some serious therapy when that time comes.
Savannah is a smart gal, she'll choose what's right for her.
My big girl and I went to see "The Help" on Saturday. There are some movies you walk out of a changed person and this is definitely one of them. We loved it and loved that it followed the book minus a few parts here and there. Cicely Tyson (Constantine) is one of my favorite actresses. Too bad she had such a small part. I loved her as Gloria Dump in "Winn Dixie".
How exciting for Savannah and you! I can't wait to hear how it all goes! :)
Thanks so much for the review of The Help; I have been wondering how the movie is and I have been wanting to read the book.
Take care!
In two weeks I will be seeing some of the best friends I could ever ask for...my sorority sisters. Things really do "work out" with these things. What an amazing young lady you have raised!
Just saw the Help too...and loved every second of it. Dear sweet Savannah...what a good girl...and I mean that as the ultimate compliment. May God richly bless her this week and all days as He DOES have a plan for her that includes wonderful things!
Man...that had to be the most amazing moment...to know...after all the years of praying for her and "training her up in the way she should go" that she is wholeheartedly following after the Lord and trusting His plan! That was an encouragement to me! Can't wait to hear how Bid Day went.
I loved The Help! I hope things work out for Savannah. By now she probably knows where she will be. Thinking of you Paige! My daughter went through this at UNC four years ago and I remember it well.
