helping them find their way & a fall sneak peek from John Wind

i think one of the most challenging aspects of parenting
is helping our children find their way through the maze of  opportunities
both afforded in academics and in extra curricular activities.
finding their 'thing' if you will
& yet not overcrowding their schedule.

if anything, i've always leaned a little more towards
the 'let's not overdo it' end of the continuum.
especially when they were younger.
in fact i vividly remember the days when the girl's schedule & obligations
ended by 5
dinner before 6
& baths and books read by 7
& lights out by 8.

i remember seeing families with older children and wondering
how on earth dinner schedules had gotten so wonky
& maybe just maybe
even criticizing ( in my mind. quietly) choices that seemed
to make their children appear over scheduled.
yeah. i learned quickly the reality of life with multiple children
in various sports and activities.

sports are so much more intense & competitive now than when i was growing up.
little girls are shuffled into gymnastics and ballet at age 3.
if they have talent or natural abilities
placed on , or encouraged to join,a competition squad or company by age 10 with classes 5 days per week.
travel ball. tennis. they're all like that.

our community is a very competitive one regarding sports.
to play recreation soccer or take dance just to take a dance class is almost
unheard of.

dan & i
desire for our girls to find something they love
& if it's something in which they excel
well that's icing on the cake!

trying to balance their 'thing' with rigorous academics
is a whole new ballgame.

so fastforward to caroline.
she danced when she was 3 for a season.
she also took a tumble class.
nothing crazy just a little something to do.
& honestly, being the 4th of 4
i didn't go overboard with her schedule.
she began to dance again last september.

she is a natural in dance.
she is a natural with tumbling.
she loves both. intensely loves both
she also has a very rigorous school schedule with every academic
being an advanced class.
throw in the middle school program at our church
which we value very highly
she is packed out.

i wish her homework schedule was lighter.
i love when little ones especially can come home & just play
after being in class for seven  hours.
however,  we're also seeing the benefits of hard work & rigorous academics
as savannah attends a college whose admissions alone was competitive
she has academic scholarships & is in the honor program.

anyways
not trying to stir up everyone's views on education & extra curriculars
just journaling my thoughts on decision making.
i know it's completely different for each child.
not knowing whether this 'thing' is something that they will love for years.
something that besides the obvious benefits of the particular sport,
an opportunity where they learn leadership, commitment, how to work well with others.
 just to name a few.
or
is it something that will overwhelm them with expectations.etc.

sports, academics, homeschool/private/public
all aspects of parenting where we can easily judge others
who may be doing things differently.
i don't have a clean cut template for this one.
i don't think there is such a thing.
over here, we're just trying to do the next best thing
for each of our girls, individually
& taking it one year at a time.
all the while, planning for the future
yet
enjoying and making the most of the
today.

madison danced for 11 years.
dance has been a sweet connection for them

little women

a few years after caroline was born,
i ran into a friend that had moved away 20+ years ago.
we were reconnecting via facebook
&
she said, "you did it! you had your little women".
apparently i had told her when i was 19 that i always wanted four daughters
& she actually remembered that statement.

i smile today just thinking that twenty seven years ago
i dreamed of a house full of girls.
~~~
~~~

i'll be honest.
i've thought many many times over the last several weeks
about taking a blogging sabbath.

while i may blog about an occasional recipe
or a great new jewelry designer
those are all just things that fall under the umbrella
of lifestyle blogging.
 my lifestyle.
i wear it on my sleeve
& process many things by talking through them.

i'm in a sorta of rough patch relating with and to a couple of my girls right now.
i don't want to throw anyone under the bus
nor do i want to be a overdramatic chatter box
but i'm not sure that i want to process on a blog
that a couple thousand people visit a day
where i am & what i'm processing right now.

we all know, even if you haven't birthed a baby yet,
that parenting is not for the faint of heart.
parenting teenagers isn't easy
& parenting multiple teenage girls certainly isn't easy.

i've thought about stepping away for a while
yet
this blog is a huge vehicle for me professionally.

while i have decided to continue blogging for now
you may see an intentional decrease in how i share some of my personal life
(or you may not notice it at all.)
nothings majorly wrong.
no one's dying or has run away.
 &
if i weren't so afraid that turning off the comments would delete all the past comments
i'd do that today too.

i just wanted to explain where i'm coming from.
it takes a lot of emotional energy to be vulnerable
& right now i just don't seem to have it.
when things aren't right even my creativity is zapped.
personally i don't want my blog to just be businesslike
or all about "other" things
but it may be for a little while.
thanks for understanding & sticking with me anyway.

a generation of peace

one of my favorite aspects of parenting is when, as the parent,
i have the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by my children.

savannah has been working as an intern at our church all summer,
primarily with the middle school, which is awesome for caroline!
she's doing a fabulous job ( as per the youth pastor).

one of the outreach opportunities our church has is called generation salaam.
we load up several busses with students and adults
(sometimes upwards of 200 folks)
& head over to clarkston.
i've heard that clarkston is the most diverse square mile in the world.
many are refugees and below the poverty level

our adults work with the men and women there by teaching English classes and business skills.
the students spend time tutoring, playing with, and sharing with the  children.
mainly loving on them for a couple hours.
we seek relationships strong enough to be able to talk about our faith.

i've had the opportunity to be a part of gen salaam for years
yet seeing an instagram of my girls loving on these beautiful children
was the most powerful inspiration of all.

i've had several sessions falling on wednesday evenings but finally had the opportunity to go.
it's a mission trip
that doesn't require a passport
& only 25 minutes down the highway.

it had to be 90 + degrees.
the girls wear long skirts or pants
most of them had on little to no makeup
yet
their radiance as they hopped off the bus and began to love on those children
is one of the most beautiful things i've ever witnessed....

when i pulled up these images of savannah
( & some of emi when i wasn't there)
i'll be honest
seeing her do what she does & seeing her love for the lord
& for others in action
blew me away.
another moment when i have learned a priceless lesson
& seen Jesus in one of my own...

our noonday statement bracelet was a huge hit
with the little girls...

the children do NOT want us to leave.
when we load the bus, a few of the adults have to stay off
and watch because the little ones have been known to hang on to the bus...

our staff is currently working on an entire
dvd and informational packet for churches who desire to do
something similar in their community.

i can hardly wait until tomorrow night to go again...

Jesus said,
"Let the little children come to me,
and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of heaven belongs
 to such as these."
