my favorite new dishes & chick food

my dan is not a big salad eater.
truth be told, he eats no salad whatsoever.

if we have a night where he needs to be out at a meeting or an event
& it's just the girls and myself for dinner,
i'll declare it chick food night.
that usually gets a resounding amen.
they love light fare, salads & girly things that my meat & potatoes guy would rather pass on.

so the other day we served up the oriental cabbage salad that's been around the block & has a few variations.
i used radicchio & think i'll stick with the sweeter red cabbage
but it's still yummy nonetheless.

1 head napa cabbage shredded
i add in red cabbage or radicchio
5 green onions chopped

brown 2 oz slivered almonds
1/2 jar sesame seeds
pack of crumbled ramon noodles
with 1/2 c butter ( yeah, i know)

wisk 1/2 c sugar
1/4/ cup vinegar
1/2 c oil
1 Tbsp soy sauce

dress just prior to serving

a couple weeks ago i stumbled upon these fabulous dishes from Home Goods.
the smaller bowls i picked up last year at Heliotrope in Decatur for you local girls,
but the blues match perfectly.
the white plates are sorta asymmetrical around the border
& have a cute modern italian flare.

i pulled out my painting from melanie
a couple weeks ago. when i saw the plates i knew i had to add them to my collection.
i usually don't keep our place settings out but they're so cheerful
i couldn't resist.

i am loving my narnia sign that i commissioned tara & andy to create.
loving it!
if you have inquiries you can hop over here

alrighty my friends,
i hope ya'll have a wonderful weekend.
the weather has been fabulous.
i'm photographing 1 year old twins in the morning
& a senior session on sunday!
but first, i'm off to the dentist where i'm so exhausted
i might just sack out in the chair!

Loved this post because I love that salad dish. My aunt does a variation for every summer BBQ. She uses just regular old coleslaw kit, but the almonds and ramen totally make it. Second, your table looks so beautiful. So Spring, So Beachy. Third, memories came swarming back when I read your Narnia sign. I did a play in school and those lines came flooding back to memory. Good times. Happy Friday to you.

That salad was a favorite with our PTSA at the high school. Everybody could make it and we'd just dump it together to feed the 300 staff members!

And the funny thing that I learned after the girls left for college and I was left with Jeff and the boys in the house is that evidently real men don't eat quiche was meatball subs and the like or there was lots of complaining about my cooking. Who knew?

Love that you honor Dan by only doing salads when he's gone. A great memory for your girls too...that *mommy/daughter food! Have a great weekend.....hope you don't drool in the dental chair! :)

Those are my favorite
blues and I'm wearing
a bracelet in the exact
hue, as I type : )

That is my go-to salad
for potlucks, as everyone
loves it!

Enjoy your snooze in
the chair....

That looks delightful and your dishes are very pretty. They make the salad look even more light and summery. I could eat some kind of salad at every meal, or even as the meal.
Your Dan and my Jason must come from the same mold. Jason grew up in a meat and potatoes way and I've been trying to correct that problem for nearly 20 years now.

Mmmm, a salad made with a stick of butter! Now that's my kind of salad!

Pretty, pretty table setting. That color is gorgeous...

Thinking of you as you go to the dentist...I hate that chore. Good for you for taking care of yourself...

Oh my gosh! You have NO idea how much I LOVE(D) this salad. I use to make it about every single week, all for myself. But .. with the sugar (and those ramen boodles) it is off limits to me.. been years since I've had it!!
LOve your turquoise china - gorgeous!

I make a salad similar to yours, but I use cole slaw mix and broccoli slaw.

Thank goodness my husband will eat salads, but he won't eat any type of stir fry or asian food so that is what I tend to make when he isn't home. :) I love that cabbage salad. I use savoy cabbage and sunflower seeds instead of sesame. Yum. Also, I never use butter so you could just oven roast your stuff without it if you wanted to eliminate the fat. ;) Love the pretty dishes. Makes me think of the beach. ;)

I love a chick food night, too. My husband likes a salad every now and then but not every night. I have made that salad too, but not in a long time. I think I'll make it again soon. Thanks! :)

LOVE your blue dishes!!

I love using Ramen noodles on my salads (my kids call them pootin' noodles...don't ask!) and what I do is squirt a little "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" on a package and toast them in the oven for a few minutes...they are great on a salad or just as a guilt-free snack.

I've got to make your chick food recipe sometime...and I'm lucky cause my man will eat salads (most of the time anyway)!

I love this meal, you were the one that introduced it to me and it's one of my favorite!

The dishes are so pretty. I can't believe how much of that color I have seen around this spring. I love it, it's such a "summery" color!

Have a great weekend, my dear!
