The Postmistress

a couple of days ago while awaiting the arrival of my girlfriend
for our lunch date
i began to peruse the life section of USA Today
on the front page was a write up on a new book by Sarah Blake ,
The Postmistress
they gave it a stellar review
compared it to the wildly popular "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett
Kathryn gives a little blurb on the cover ( here's an interview with both of them)

after lunch i zoomed over & grabbed my own copy
complete with a gorgeous cover
you know how shallow i am about gorgeous covers
and
ruffed pages
how i love ruffed pages
is that what they're called or did i make that up?

figuring if Kathryn Stockett loves it
& i love Kathryn Stockett
then by golly
certainly i will love it too!

speaking of "The Help"

please tell me you have read it
if not, climb out from under the rock & go grab yourself a copy

hands down one of my fave books of all time

i could hear the voices of those fantastic characters as i soaked in every page
i hated for it to end
i terribly missed Abileen, Minny & Skeeter
not to mention a fantastic cover :)

rumor has it
"Saving CeeCee Honeycutt" is fabulous
its certainly next on my list

don't send me hate mail
but i must be honest
"the time travelers wife"?
shoot me now
i could barely take it
i really needed that 500something pager to be done with itself
never could really follow the time line
& their love affair was a snoozer to me
i know all my favorite bloggers encouraged me to perservere
i did
glad i'm done
i sorta maybe kinda liked the very very end
hate me

francine rivers is a fantastic story teller
"The Sin Eater" & "The Atonement Child"
were both pretty good reads

also really enjoyed
"The Summer House"
by nancy thayer

"Pretty in Plaid"
started totally laugh out loud funny
but quickly disolved

besides the incredible "The Notebook"
why do i continue to read Nicholas Sparks
someone dies
you always cry
& i must admit
in my who-really-cares-opinion
i don't think he's an incredible talented writer
sorry nick
anyway
"The Last Song"
was okish

saw the movie "Dear John" to spend time with my 14 year old
which is the total target age for this movie
maybe because of ole Channing
did not like the ending
thankyouverymuch
savannah read the book
fairly certain she whizzed it across the room when she finished
shockingly the book ending was apparantly even worse
but on an upnote, i did love the music from the movie

my girls loved "The Doll People" series
so Caroline & I are reading that together

ya'll know i always love to hear what you're reading too!

Oh Paige!! You know I love this post :). We've already discussed most of these books. I am going to read The Postmistress next. Trying to decide if I should buy the actual book since it is so gorgeous (like you, I LOVE beautiful books), or just download it on my kindle. What to do!!

I love Beautiful covers on books. Why is that?! I just started reading "The Help". Love it.
I totally agree about N. Sparks. He bores me. :)

i LOVE it when you do book reviews! I tried to read eat , pray, love and hated it. finally gave up. I thought if i still hate it at chapter 23 then I give up!!! i don't know why people love it so much. I didn't care for the time travelers wife either. DOUBLE LOVED a same kind of different as me. Next comes the Beth moore book and one I picked up at costco that looks cute. So you like the help better than Redeeming love?????? Now i MUST read it!!! they have it at costco and the top book is sooo pretty, I will probably pick that one up at well.

I am the queen of have reading books...If I don't get into it fast it just sits there. I've been meaning to read the last sin eater so maybe I'll finally get around to it. Thanks for all the recommendations!

Oh I never did finish the sequel to same kind of different as me, did you? I've hearing mixed reviews about it...

I love to hear what others are reading and what makes a good book. I too often am not a great fan of the books that others think is "the best".
Sometimes as much as I agree that Sparks is a simple story writer, it is the story that grabs you.
I like books that grab my heart and cause it to miss a beat, or embrace my heart with a passion that caresses the mind as well.
There are few things more wonderful than having a good read, where you can't wait to get to the end of the book, but also never want it to end.
A gorgeous cover is like being in a candy store.

Love your reading list. I've been thinking of doing a post on books. I got the Kindle for christmas and even though I Love feel of a good book, its nice to read the kindle in bed and not be too loud with my hubby sleeping. I just finished a Jodi Picoult book The Pact, love her. I think I will download THe Help I checked it out at the store and I thought it looked great. I agree with you on the TIme Travelers Wife those books are all the same and Nicholas Sparks not interested. Before the Jodi Picoult book I read Lovely Bones. I enjoyed the book but then saw the movie, why did I do that? Not good, maybe it was Mark Walberg but don't see it.

Thanks for the reviews!

I'll have to add that to my list of "must reads"! I loved The Help!
Just finished reading The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen, not real deep, kind of entertaining and certainly a quick read.

"The Help" is an amazing book. It quickly became one of my faves. I loved that you said you could hear them and missed them when it was done since I completely relate to that. I guess I'll have to read "The Postmistress". I had to laugh about Sparks' books because I wonder why I read them when I know there will be tears involved. I'm not as excited to read "Dear John" now. However, I am reading a lot of non-fiction in life when I have a moment. I love Karen Kingsbury, too. I haven't finished the last of a series because I don't know that I am ready to part with the characters. Francine Rivers is a wonderful, gifted author, and I finished "Redeeming Love" for the second time this summer. I did grab a few titles to read from your post. Thank you!!

Hey there. You can't get away that easily. Come back and leave your link and some of your favorite blogs.
And hurry up already! :)

Thank you for my hug. I needed that today!

p.s. Beth Moore is coming south in April. I am thinking an official meet up is in order. Plus Beth Moore. Equals... Squeals and giggles!

And for books. You can usually find me in the self help section!! LOL!

I recently read SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME and I will never be the same. Ever.

And right now I am reading the new Beth Moore book. Because I just love her and it is really, really good. Cuts you to the core- (in a good way)

Love you to pieces,

Sibi

Ok, you are like the eighth person to mention "The Help" to me in the past two weeks. (NOt that you mentioned it directly to ME, but you know what I mean. It was mentioned. By you. And I read it.) lol

So I went to B&N and picked it up, turned it over, read the cover and I put it back because it scared me. It's SOOO huge (I'm a SLOW reader) and it's $25!! (I'm cheap!) It's that good, huh? Will it feel HUGE and long?

I LOVE books. I read all the time except for right now because I'm writing my own book and it makes me feel inferior, but I recommend "The Shape of Mercy" by Susan Meissner "Remember to Forget" by Deb Raney and I know there are lots and lots more... I will come back if I think of them! :)

I felt the same way about 'Twilight' that you felt about 'Time Travelers Wife'. It was all I could do to get through it. Nicholas Sparks is pretty predictable. They are usually quick reads and I've like the few books I've read of his but I know what you mean. Right now I am reading 'The Difference' by Jean Chatzky. It's a money type book which I like.

thanks for the reviews!

Thanks Paige! I have been looking for some good reading material since Hutton and I will be inpatient at CHOP for A MONTH! Shew! Its going to be a long one but the end is going to be beautiful!

I loved The Time Traveler's Wife, but I think most of the reason why I love it is because of my own long-distance relationship.. I could kind of relate in a weird, definitely not direct, way.

Dear John book made me cry (again, military stuff..) but the movie I thought was horrible. HORRIBLE!

I haven't read The Help.. *crawling out from under rock, checking Amazon*

I love your book reviews! I don't see enough of them out in the blogosphere!

(Oh, I just finished reading Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin, waiting for In A Perfect World by Laura Kasischke to arrive.)

oh yea!! a post on books. i love books!! have not read the help yet, but it in on my list. i just climbed out from my rock long enough to right it down. and i will be getting the book you are reading now too, just based on the cover alone, those draw me in too. i have to admit, i did not finish the time travelers wife. couldn't follow along. i never leave a book without finishing. that was a first. maybe i need to visit barnes and noble tonight. thanks for your reviews.

You've completely inspired me to read more... gosh i use to read sooo much and keep telling myself i don't have the time.... well now i am completely motivated to pick up The Postmistress... the cover is so pretty... I think my problem has been reading books that haven't hooked me like N. Sparks... all his books read the same to me.
thanks for the reviews!

Hey girl! Love, love this cover too! I will pick up almost anything for a good cover! If you haven't read Same Kind of Different as Me it must be your next- a fabulous, life changing book. Also- The Glass Castle- incredible- one of my favorites. As a rule my favorite books are the ones that portray strong women who overcome obstacles with amazing outcomes- just like YOU. Another favorite is Shanghai girls (great cover)- one more that portrayed strong women- and also focused on my love for China (imagine that with two gorgeous China babies) and their women. If you want a crazy but good read- The Vanishing Act of Esme Lenox- disturbing but unbelievable and once again focusing on the power of a woman.

By the way- Savannah is gorgeous- just like her momma! How fast time flies??? The years pass but I still think of you and feel like we were 15 years ago- how can that be??? Paige- you have some good genes- I swear you look just like Savannah's sister!

Paige I love when you do book reviews too...there are several I haven't read yet...what is funny...when I stock up on books...it seems I see they are on your read list but I haven't done that in awhile...next on the list is the Last Song that was given to me...knowing that it will make me cry now...GREAT! Anyway...I'll definitely have to get those that you love...they sound good too:)

Girl I love it when you recommend books! I'm adding them all to my list. One day soon when I'm done getting this house ready to sell, I'm going to start reading again! I will check out that series for Emma too. Right now she is all about Nancy Drew but that won't last forever!

Laura KW said...

So it wasn't just me?! I tried SO HARD to read and enjoy the Time Travellers wife but was just couldn't do it. Thanks for the other recommendations, will have to check them out.

I'm in complete agreement. The Help is on my top 5 list for sure. I started reading slower towards the end to make it last a bit longer. It was a real eye opener for me I must admit. I live in the Pacific Northwest and we just don't have the level of racisim that they have in other parts of the country. I was raised by very NON racist parents and have never understood hatred for another race. The Help was heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time. Other books on my top five list...The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and anything Jodi Picoult writes.

i'm not reading anything but your blog...but you can never, never, never, never close this because one day i will have time to read more and i will need this as a reference...k?

Oh dear, I have to climb out from under my rock. :) I have wanted to read it, but keep forgetting about The Help. But I totally agree with you about the Time Travelers Wife - a bit boring. Right now I am reading nothing but school books like Jane Eyre, which is actually pretty good. Love your book reviews, I always can't wait to go get some new books! Hey, you should start an online book club! :)

I loved the Help too...it is one of my ALL time faves! I missed those same characters when it was over!!! I had the postmistress in my hand last week (I loved the cover too) but I set it back down and now I am full of regret as I cannot buy it until after EAster. I am not shopping AT ALL for Lent! Never been a Nicholas Sparks fan and I did not like eat, pray love...I only made it through the eat part!

Thanks so much for the book reviews! I have not read any of these (other than Summer House which I liked) so I have some new must reads!

Paige this is totally off the subject of this post, but what kind of camera do you use? I keep thinking if I use the same camera you use that my photographs will look as good. Maybe hoping is more the word I'm looking for here.

Thanks for these great reviews. I love to read books but my time allows for just a one every now and then so I want to make sure it is a GOOD one before I start it!
That is true that I am drawn to a pretty cover!

I thought The Help was wonderful and couldn't put it down. The author managed to capture the characters well considering she was not African-American. This story would make a great movie. Everyone that I have recommended it to has loved the book.

You should read "The Art of Racing In the Rain" and "Water For Elephants", wonderful books!

Hi Paige, I found your blog from your article in Artful Blogging - I so enjoyed reading it! I relate with juggling life and finding the balance. I have to work on it every day, if I ever figure it out I'll let you know, lol! I have a stack of books on my bedside that I refer to as my leaning tower, and I bought four more today...sigh. I'm reading Jane Austen Ruined My Life, by Beth Pattillo, Cowgirl at Heart, by Christine Lynxwiler (she is a beautiful person in real life, btw), and Everybody's Normal Till You Get To Know Them by John Ortberg and those are just in the adult category. I write middle grade fiction, so I'm engulfed in three MG novels too. I'm glad I found your blog and I look forward to reading more!

Thanks for the reviews...you had me with the cover on "The Postmistress" :)
