what's for dinner tonight?
well
it all went down hill from there.
rapidly down hill.
in my 12 years as dan's wife
& 18 years as savannah's mom
( & the chronological order goes on)
i've never once made a meatloaf.
so it came as a big surprise, to those two in particular,
that i would "assemble" a meatloaf.
& yes
i actually used the verb "assemble".
i shoulda said "create" or "whip up"
but i chose assemble.
i don't really know why i chose to say assemble
because "i have never"
(please use your best southern accent)
said that before.
but assemble combined with meatloaf laid the groundwork for many a harrassment smile that day.
i was also going to make red potatoes
& serve roasted asparagus
and triple chocolate chunk brownies for a treat for those who ate their meatloaf
because
he is a meat & potatoes guy who loves chocolate
forcryingoutloud.
recently i stumbled across
what looked like a fabulous, healthy no less, meatloaf recipe
which i will not share the location
for fear that the cute blogger that posted it will think i'm slamming her.
you're on your own for that one.
anyway
i enjoyed the humorous harrassment banter
all.day.long.
& chose to laugh about it because. whatever.
everyone eats meatloaf right?
apparently not
apparently "beatloaf" as my yankee hubby refers to it
is not eaten by everyone
& is clearly the joke of all food jokes says 18 year old who is heading off to eat the mealplan at UGA.
something like ....oh, we're having meatloaf for dinner...heavy sigh.
at some point during the day
brinkley got out
the guilty party has yet to come forward
but....
my sweet saver -of -all -lost -kittens & puppies -neighbor rings the door bell around 5pm
while i was slaving in the hot kitchen over said meatloaf assembly.
i open the door to find her with brinkley on a "spare" leash.
he was found out beside the busy road behind our house!!!!
oh my word!
i could have cried right then and there.
i chose to snap at my family & say things like
are you kidding me? no one noticed they let brinkley out?
and the ever famous , seriously? instead.
at some point
dan decided to text savannah the following..
" i think brinkley left on his own free will because he heard we were having meatloaf"
oh the level of humor
never ceases
around here
the meatloaf was fabulous
& everyone cleaned their plates
except for madi who does not ever never ever eat pork
or "pig" as she calls it
& the famous meatloaf included sausage.
& i heard more than once
something along the lines of
"i can't believe you're not photographing this"
"what? no meatloaf assembly collage?"
"shall i hold a plate for you? for the blog post of course?"
har har
next time i am totally sneaking some flax seed in the meatloaf assembly line.
i'll show them!
so in lieu of meatloaf pics
here's some more cherished beach moments...
i love the beach
they loved the meatloaf
the end.
ps.
dan never ever makes fun of me or my cooking.
but i did ask for it. serving my first meatloaf & all.
he's really a perfect gentlemen. just want to make sure ya'll know that
& don't think he's a meany
I can't believe you've never "assembled" a meatloaf before. That's hysterical. I love meatloaf. Especially a meatloaf sandwich the next day. Yummy! So glad Brinkley was okay. It's super scary when they get out and take off.
ReplyDeleteBahaha!!! I literally laughed out loud about the text Dan sent Savannah...So funny!
ReplyDeleteI don't eat meatloaf...I've tried so many and every time I just don't like it...so, no meatloaf assembly in my near future! LOL
lol, love that Dan sent a text stating Brinkley ran away because of the Meatloaf. We had the exact same thing for dinner tonight, Kayla and hubby love Meatloaf, Brooklyn rarely eats anything for dinner and I'm not a huge fan. I'm glad after all their jokes they ended up liking it and eating it all! Maybe you should make it weekly for them just for their kidding :)
ReplyDeleteI am laughing out loud and nearly crying. HILARIOUS!! Oh Paige, you've got your hands full with 4 girls and a funny husband. Good luck with that:) At least now SMK can go to college and know what good meatloaf tastes like because I'm pretty sure whatever the UGA cafeteria serves doesn't look or taste homemade.
ReplyDeleteOn a serious note, I'm glad Brinkley is fine.
After all of that it sounds like you need a book, bath and drink.
I have a very strong dislike to meatloaf. I think anything with the word "loaf" in it conjures up negative images. Unless it's a loaf of pound cake.
ReplyDeleteI do make meatloaf for my family on a PRN basis (aka= when someone feels like they have to have it). I just don't like the look of that much meat at one time.
I'm sure yours was delicious.
Dear Paige,
ReplyDeleteI'm with Shannon on this one I'm
not a huge fan but I did have it with melted cheese before and it wasn't bad. I profess, I have never
made a meatloaf either.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Best,
CBO
This made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteSo how funny is it that us Yankees in the Village love meatloaf so much that the teenage Yankee daughter actually requests it for her birthday? P.S. I don't like meatloaf either. Except mine. I love mine! Mainly because it doesn't taste like a meatloaf to me. P.S.S. I love that text Dan-the-man sent. Classic!
ReplyDeleteyum! please post the recipe for the brownies! :) I usually use ground turkey to make meatloaf -- it is super yummy. love your stories!
ReplyDeleteToo funny...We here love meatloaf..Especially cold meatloaf sandwiches..That last sentence might make Savannah gag..LOL..Have a great week..
ReplyDeleteJanet
haha that was so funny :)
ReplyDeletei am not a meatloaf person - however a few years ago i started making it for my family and they all love it (and the way i 'assemble' it it is a super easy dinner!)
y'all crack me up.
xo ellie
oh no!!!!! :)
ReplyDeletecute beach pics!!!
and it's GOOD. really REALLY GOOD!
promise...
pinky swear...
shoot!
I have to my family loves meatloaf. Try the Pioneer Woman's recipe sooooo good.
ReplyDeleteFunny story!
So funny about the meatloaf! What great pics. Love her hair braided like that and just my kind of dress! Let me know if you can recommend some great "boots" for the fall :)
ReplyDeleteThat's soooo funny. I've gotten away with never having to bake a turkey, in 28 years. (!) Glad it worked out for you.
ReplyDeleteLove all the beach pics!
ReplyDeleteWe love meatloaf...well, most of us.
LOL at this whole story..& LOL at Lissa. ;)
That is a seriously funny post!
ReplyDeleteI have a great recipe for meatloaf(that I too got from a cute blogger). Thank heavens for cute bloggers who post meatloaf recipes (and next door neighbors who save lost kittens and dogs.)
Love your beach photos -- wish mine turned out so nice!
ReplyDeleteMeatloaf - ick! Hubby loves it -- it grosses me out. Made it once in 25+ years of marriage. Bad wifey!! :)
Have a great day!
Janet
my husband loves meatloaf!!! i can take it or leave it.
ReplyDeleteI love the text. That cracks me up. I've never "assembled" meatloaf either.
ReplyDeleteDo you know what I love most about this post - aside from the brilliant writing that is? That a family of four girls can rib their mother just as well as a family of four boys! Teasing mother - the great equalizer...
ReplyDeletexx
OMG I wish we could get that recipe. I hate all the meatloaf recipes I have... But I would love to try a new one!!
ReplyDeleteI too am not a big fan of the ever popular meat loaf. That said, my wonderful loving wife of 32 years, has always tried new recipes. We have had some WONDERFUL meals, and on occasion some not so wonderful ones. So when we were first married, I came home to a wonderful smell coming from the kitchen, when I asked her what it was, she just smiled and said a surprise. When she took it from the oven I could see it was a meatloaf, I smiled and thought I could try this. To my surprise and somewhat horror when she cut into the meatloaf it was filled with whole dill pickles..... yep you read that right dill pickles. It was a cheese and dill pickle meat loaf. To my utter surprise I LOVED it, and this has become a staple in our meal planning. So eat your meat loaf I say and you never know what you might find in the middle of it!!!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and yours
Curtis & Sherrie
Your pictures are pretty as always, but sorry...can't stop laughing over your meatloaf story, and especially the "I have never" in your best southern accent. Love you, girl!
ReplyDeleteXo,
Linsey
This is so funny. I have never "assembled" meat loaf until just about a year ago(after 20years, I guess I figured i ought to try it!). The first time i did, I got the same razzing from my family as your family gave you! I do have to say the "loaf" is not their favorite and I have only assembled it a few more times after that. :) And poor Brinkley got drug into it too! :)
ReplyDeleteTake care, Paige and I love the pics of Caroline; she is such a cutie pie! :)
jodi
I "assembled" a meatloaf once. It was during our first year of marriage. I was a novice in the kitchen so needless to say I was proud of myself. Sweet hubby ate it but when pressed for how good it was told me, honestly, that it tasted like cafeteria food. It didn't hurt my feelings but in 21 years of marriage I have never made another one!!
